Dee Karl: Does Hockey Grow in Brooklyn? For a place that isn't even finished being built, they're making a splash booking acts.

I see no reason why Hockey could not work in Brooklyn. You cannot compare the Brooklyn Aviators to an NHL team. If the Isles young talent develops the way it should with JT there should be enough support in Brooklyn. Having plenty of train stops is huge as well not to mention the media attention in Brooklyn. LI is not stepping up so Brooklyn has to look good at this point.

That's what I was thinking
Brooklyn would only increase the fanbase and revenue for Wang. It's honestly time to stick it to Nassau and Kate murray

Exactly! Just think of the Ranger/Isles games with the Isles in Brooklyn. To me it's a win win situation.

but from reports i have heard, the barclays center would only hold about 14.5k fans, in a huge metropolitan area for a sport that apparently is growing, bettman and co are going to want them to have at least a 17k arena, so unless barclays is a stop gap while another arena has been planned and approved and is in the beginning stages of being built, im not sure how viable it is

*i dont want the isles to leave, im just lookin at it from the top guys perspective

Hopefully the building could be re-configured down the line. Even with 14.5k there should be plenty of the luxury boxes in the building to help with revenue.

the thing with todays arenas is they know how to get the most seats in to maximize $ so re-configuring wont really do much as they would be already maximizing seat-space ratio (if that makes sense- most possible seats possible) but due to the small size of the arena there will also be a limited amount of luxury boxes that can be put in

sure they will make revenue and all, but im not sure if the higher ups would like a NHL team in a small arena in a large city when they know that the isles can get crowds of 17k rather than 14k because well that would create more revenue

It's going to be interesting. The old Boston Garden was pretty small I thought? Unless LI steps up it may be Brooklyn or Quebec for the Isles or somewhere else outside of NY.

No that arena is NOT a long term solution to the Islanders needs.

I do feel however that Brooklyn could very strongly support an NHL franchise.. If suburbia Long Island could support them.. there is no reason why inner city Long Island cant.

That arena as is is not a viable long term solution to the islanders housing woes. But it is a very suitable stop gap to their own arena being built. Even if that Stop gap is 5-10 years. Just like the sharks playing 3 years in the 11k seat Cow Palace while a new home was being built. The Barclays Center can only seat 14.5k for hockey & that would be the smallest capacity in the NHL. Gary Bettman has said it was too small. I question why 14.5 in NY isnt acceptable while 15k in hockey starved Winnipeg is.
Untill Prokhorov or someone from Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment comes forward & says they have a plan that adds to the capacity total..... its just a stop gap.

KC the same as Brooklyn? A little selfish, don't you think? In Brooklyn at least fans can go to some games and follow a local team on TV. Outside of the Met area is like the Dodhers & Giants going west except there will no Mets to repeplace the Isles.

well for more modern day they want big arenas compared to small, and the only reason why i believe winnipeg got their team back for the arena they have is because the population there isnt that big compared to ny and others

i just hope that the isles stay in the area, and i really believe they will, i just dont know if barclays will be viable for a permanent location

hopefully it is all figured out sooner rather than later, but it doesnt seem to be the case, (frank) politicians and voters who dont know poop

This.

Luxury boxes are where the money is. Unfortunately for the "little people" like the fans who post on boards like these, the limited seating will lead to expensive seating. And, if the team ever performs on the scoreboard like we all hope they do, seating will be in demand, as is always the case with a winner, and the seats will be even more expensive.
I do think 14K plus boxes is plenty for now.

And for the poster who asked about Suffolk and the LIRR, it's not that simple. The Babylon/Montauk, Ronkonkoma/Greenport, and Huntington/Port Jefferson lines are not interchangable. A person would have to go to Jamaica (Queens) to make a switch from one line to other, which would not work. Brooklyn really is the only option when it comes to mass transit.
When they win, it won't matter, though. Getting to the Coliseum via mass transit sucks. They had no problem filling the place when they won consistently.

Thanks. It would be great to get back to meaningful Isles, Ranger, and Devils games. I just do not see LI getting there act together. I also do not know if the Isles can play 4, or 5 years in Brooklyn and then leave? Brooklyn is going to want the Isles for good.

im sure that they could come up with a short lease agreement with the nets, it would help the nets owners payoff some of the costs while bringing them in $ so it would be a win-win, considering that they didnt plan for the isles playing there and it would be a steady stream of $

its a mess right now, has been for a while, something needs to be done

I believe there are over 90 luxury boxes at the Barclay Center compared to 35 at the Nassau Coliseum. That's a lot of revenue for Wang if you can fill them.

15k in Winnipeg you would have to have 25k in brooklyn
80.00 for nose bleed seats and up 199.99 for lower bowl. when was the last time the Islanders got to charge those prices?

I think hockey would work in Brooklyn.

Games during the week would be attended by Nassau/Queens/Brooklyn residents and Suffolk residents who are taking the LIRR home from work. A few here and there will take the ride from Suffolk during the week.

The weekends will include fans from all over the area.

I could see the NHL making most of our games at 730pm to allow people a little extra time to make it to the game.

As for LIRR prices - a lot of people from Suffolk/Nassau who would be attending these games work in NYC and have a monthly pass so they will utilize that. Brooklyn/Queens people would take the subway which is $5 roundtrip.

I would enjoy the Islanders in Brooklyn because they wouldn't be in Nassau anymore

If you can fill them, I don't know if it's as much about the revenue and not more about the capacity? At least part of the reasoning is to have as many people watch the game as possible.
